Accurate patient identity is the foundation of interoperability — but without a national standard, healthcare continues to face costly and dangerous mismatches. In a recent article by Health Data Management, Kathryn Ayers Wickenhauser, MBA, FACHDM, CHPC explores what it will take to strengthen identity assurance and patient matching across the healthcare ecosystem. Progress will depend on collaboration and alignment around privacy-enhancing, standards-based approaches that ensure every record truly belongs to the right individual. In healthcare, data silos have long stood in the way of better coordination, smarter insights, and patient-centered innovation. But momentum is building toward change. With new enforcement actions from HHS and recent court rulings, information blocking—the improper restriction of electronic health information—faces unprecedented scrutiny. This marks a meaningful shift toward true interoperability, where data flows securely and efficiently to support better outcomes. In a new post, Jonathan E. Goldin, Chief Legal Officer at Pearl Health, examines how policy, technology, and market forces are converging to advance data sharing—and why interoperability is not just a compliance requirement, but a strategic imperative for the future of healthcare. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/efcaCHQf #Interoperability #HealthcareInnovation #HealthTech #ValueBasedCare

🔒 What is PHI (Protected Health Information)? PHI stands for Protected Health Information — any individually identifiable health information that relates to a person’s health, healthcare, or payment for healthcare services. In simple terms, PHI = patient information that must be kept private and secure. 🩺 PHI Covers Information About: 1️⃣ A person’s past, present, or future physical or mental health condition. 2️⃣ Healthcare services provided to an individual (diagnosis, treatment, or procedures). 3️⃣ Payments made for those healthcare services. 📋 Examples of PHI include: Name, address, phone number, or email. Medical record number, account number, or insurance ID. Test results, lab reports, or doctor’s notes. Research data or biological samples that contain patient identifiers. ⚖️ Why PHI Matters: PHI is protected under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) in the U.S., which ensures the privacy, security, and confidentiality of patient information. Protecting PHI isn’t just about compliance — it’s about maintaining trust between patients and healthcare providers. “Privacy isn’t just a policy — it’s a promise of trust in healthcare.” 📊 #MedicalBilling #RCM #HealthcareCompliance #HIPAA #HealthcarePrivacy #PHI #HealthcareProfessionals #RevenueCycleManagement #DataSecurity

🔐 Why hospital systems need real redaction: Hospitals manage enormous volumes of patient data every day. From admissions and medical records to research files, every document carries sensitive information that must be handled with care. Too often, redaction is treated as a visual fix instead of a security process. Covering text or adding black boxes is not enough. True redaction permanently deletes protected health information (PHI) so it cannot be recovered or exposed. When done properly, true redaction helps hospital systems: ✅ Stay compliant with HIPAA and privacy regulations ✅ Reduce the risk of breaches and fines ✅ Strengthen patient trust and institutional reputation ✅ Save time through AI-powered automation and consistency Manual redaction is slow and inconsistent. Automated tools like Redactable make it possible to remove sensitive data accurately and at scale, giving healthcare teams confidence in every file they share. 🌍💡 Imagine a “CIBIL for Health”: Building a Smarter Future for Global Healthcare & Insurance 🏦 When you apply for a loan, banks check your credit score to assess financial reliability. 🏥 But when it comes to health insurance, companies still rely on self-declared medical details — and that’s where things often go wrong. Every year, thousands of claims are ❌ rejected — not because people lie, but because they simply forget a past diagnosis, prescription, or hospital visit. Meanwhile, insurers struggle with 🔍 fraud detection, inconsistent disclosures, and missing medical data — leading to inefficiencies and mistrust. 💭 What If We Had a “Health Data Bureau”? An independent, consent-based global platform that tracks verified hospital visits, diagnostics, and treatments — just like how CIBIL or Equifax track credit history. Such a system could: 🩺 Empower individuals with a lifelong, transparent health record. 📊 Help insurers assess health risk fairly before issuing a policy. 🛡️ Reduce fraudulent or disputed claims. 🤝 Strengthen trust and efficiency across the healthcare ecosystem. ⚙️ The Technology Already Exists We already have the building blocks — EHR systems, FHIR/HIE interoperability, cloud infrastructure, and digital identity frameworks. What’s missing is collaboration among innovators, insurers, and global healthcare IT pioneers. 🌐 Healthcare leaders like MEDITECH, operating in 28+ countries, are uniquely positioned to turn this vision into reality. Their expertise in secure, interoperable EHR ecosystems could enable a consent-driven “Health Score Bureau” that benefits both patients and insurers — globally. 🚀 My Mission My team is currently working on this concept — exploring how a neutral, global Health Data Bureau could: ✅ Prevent claim rejections caused by missing or inaccurate data. ✅ Enable transparent, data-driven underwriting. ✅ Reduce fraud and speed up claims. I’m now seeking insights, perspectives, and potential collaborations — especially from professionals in healthcare IT, insurance, or interoperability domains. 💬 I’d love to hear your thoughts: 🧩 How feasible is a global “Health Bureau” in today’s healthcare ecosystem? 🔐 How can we ensure privacy, security, and patient consent? 🌏 Should it be driven by governments, nonprofits, or health-tech leaders like MEDITECH? Let’s make health transparency as universal as credit transparency. Because trust in data = trust in care. 💙 #HealthTech #InsurTech #DigitalHealth #Innovation #EHR #Meditech #Interoperability #HealthcareData #HealthScore #InsuranceTransformation #FHIR #HealthTransparency #AIinHealthcare #GlobalHealthHelen Michelle OConnor O’Connor, Helen Waters, Bryson Macey, Lauren Riley, Dawn Zambito, Rosalyn Pierce, Gina Kerley.

Digitisation of healthcare data and compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) require hospitals to prepare proactively, as the supporting regulations are yet to be finalised. The first critical step involves conducting a comprehensive impact assessment to understand how the act applies to existing systems and processes. Central to compliance is obtaining informed and specific consent for every type of data use, whether for treatment, third-party sharing, insurance, or diagnostics, moving away from generic consent forms. Hospitals must also establish strong data security frameworks to safeguard sensitive medical information, as the act prescribes stringent penalties for breaches. -Mr Atulya Sharma, Chief Corporate Affairs & Governance, Clearmedi Healthcare #CII4Health #CIIHealthSummit2025 #HealthInnovation #DigitalHealthIndia #FutureOfHealthcare #HealthTech #PublicPrivateHealth #SeniorCare #CIISeniorCareConclave
