🚆 Reviving Rail at Sheerness: How Pulp Traffic Sparked a long term partnership  As part of our Victa at 30 series, we’re revisiting a pivotal moment that shaped our journey. In 1996, Victa helped bring rail back to Sheerness Docks for the first time in years. Working with EWS and Medway Ports, we coordinated critical infrastructure upgrades—including a temporary level crossing over the A249—to enable two trial timber movements under the Enterprise service.  To enable rail access to the docks, we partnered with the owners of the adjacent steelworks and operated trial pulp movements. The success of these early operations led to a permanent level crossing upgrade and opened the door to regular pulp traffic through Sheerness.   That success wasn’t just a trial—it was the start of something transformative - the beginning of a long-standing association with both the steelworks and the port, showcasing our ability to deliver practical solutions and build lasting partnerships.  Why does this matter today?  The Enterprise service was designed to make rail viable for smaller, irregular flows—helping businesses shift from road to rail. Every wagonload moved by rail instead of truck means fewer emissions, less congestion, and a cleaner future. Caltrans will soon begin a major Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project along Highway 1, extending from Moss Beach through Half Moon Bay. This extensive two-year project upgrades critical roadway infrastructure, enhances safety and improves access for all users traveling the coast. The project includes a nearly 15-mile installation of new Class II buffered bike lanes, the striping of 47 high-visibility crosswalks, improvements to bus stops, traffic operations enhancements + much more. METRONET Byford Rail Extension – Ensuring Safe Design from Concept to Completion   We are proud to have supported the METRONET Byford Rail Extension by delivering 31 Road Safety Audits across every stage of the project — from preliminary design through to pre-opening.   Working alongside Laing O’Rourke, our team of accredited auditors applied a rigorous, standards-based approach to ensure each element of this major transport corridor meets the highest safety outcomes for all users — motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.   This transformative project delivers: ✅ Safer grade separations at key intersections ✅ A new elevated Armadale Station with modern facilities ✅ An 8 km Principal Shared Path connecting Armadale to Byford ✅ Improved accessibility and multi-modal integration   Our role focused on identifying and resolving potential safety risks early. Ensuring efficient, cost-effective design solutions and a safer, more connected community outcome for WA.   This marks our fourth major collaboration with Laing O’Rourke — continuing a shared commitment to delivering safer infrastructure across Western Australia.
