In response to the Better Access program evaluation, the Australian Government is making changes to the Better Access initiative from the 1st of November 2025. GP mental health treatment plan review and mental health consultation MBS items will be removed. Instead, GP's will use general attendance items to review and provide mental healthcare. GP mental health treatment plan preparation MBS items will be retained. Don't build the review or consultation items for mental health treatment plans after November the 1st. When conducting reviews or consultations build the time tiered general attendance items for mental health treatment such as the Level E items. Medicare benefits will be payable for better access services where mental health treatment has been undertaken at a patients my Medicare registered practice or by the patients usual medical practitioner for mental health treatment. In BP Premier, these changes are supported by item number updates. The mental health treatment plan will remain unchanged.
