🚢 The elevator industry is taking professional development literally offshore NexGen, the National Association of Elevator Contractors' branch focused on developing the next generation of elevator professionals, is holding its Educational Retreat April 26 to May 1, 2026 aboard Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas. This isn't your typical conference. Workshops and keynote sessions happen between networking on a cruise ship. What's actually smart about this approach: When you're stuck on a ship with industry peers for five days, the real learning happens in those unplanned conversations between sessions. The formal workshops set the agenda, but the casual discussions at dinner solve actual problems. For an industry dealing with workforce development challenges and knowledge transfer between generations, creating extended time for relationship-building might be exactly what's needed. Railroaders are facing audits and inspections under FRA, FTA, RSSB, and the EU Railway Safety Directive, which can put safety processes in an unfavorable spotlight. After discussions with railroads globally, we've seen a common challenge: reliance on outdated audit methods. This makes it difficult to: - Provide mobile access to safety policies and rulebooks - Digitize audits to verify training and competency - Enable simple hazard and near-miss reporting for proactive risk analysis Audits should not be a source of stress; rather, they present an opportunity to innovate procedures, reduce risk, strengthen safety culture, and save time. AUVSI announced today that Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has been approved as a Trusted Uncrewed Maritime Systems (UMS) Operator Training Provider, reinforcing momentum behind the nation’s first industry-led certification framework for uncrewed maritime operations. “We’re proud to welcome OPT as a Trusted UMS Operator Training Provider as we continue to expand this program and build a strong foundation for the next generation of skilled maritime operators,” said AUVSI President and CEO Michael Robbins.
