Today we’ve announced two important steps to better serve regional Australia. We’re extending Westpac’s moratorium on regional branch closures through to 2030, and we’re launching a new Community Banking Service pilot to bring more face-to-face support to regional Australia. These initiatives follow a comprehensive review of our regional services and reflect our commitment to building strong regional communities, which are vital to our nation’s success. We know most of our customers now prefer to bank with us digitally. But we also know the importance of personal connection, especially in our regions. It’s important we get the balance right and show up for our customers in the way they want – whether that’s in-person, digitally or virtually. I’m looking forward to launching our Community Banking Service trial early next year, starting in Dungog, Bulahdelah and Manilla in regional New South Wales.
Wonderful news. Westpac leading the way. Regional Banking alive and well. Council's are a natural choice. Congratulations Mr Miller and your strategy team. A winning strategy
Fantastic decision. The shift towards 100% digital banking was predominantly for convenience, structured changed management, and lower cost, community banking could be a better alternative, especially for regional Australia. As it would make the banks inclusive, stronger with customer relationships, open doors for more personalized financial products, better lending decisions based on local knowledge rather than just algorithms. And more such as developing local economies, supporting small businesses and families who might not fit the standardized criteria of digital-only platforms. Given Australia's climate and geo landscape, during crises—provisioning of emergency credit, loan forbearance, and support when rural communities need it most. Let there's be a hybrid model with deeper engagement with local/regional communities.
Nice work Anthony - strong commitment to regional communities.
Good people want people contacted not everything on line ! Wise move !
Great initiative and congratulations to the team. Westpac’s focus on strengthening service accessibility across regions strongly aligns with my own values and experience in community-driven banking. Excited to see what’s next??
So good for our customers in regional locations
Really a good initiative, people still like to have a personal connection.
