Every senior deserves care they can understand. Results from our 2025 Social Threats to Aging Well in America survey reveal that cultural and language barriers lead 1 in 5 older adults to skip medical care – and many struggle to navigate health information. That’s why we’re proud to work with Suvida Healthcare to expand bilingual care in Arizona, helping Spanish-speaking members connect with providers who truly understand their needs. Cultural and language gaps remain such significant barriers to healthcare access, quality and affordability. Sadly as healthcare leaders we too often delude ourselves in thinking it's just about having bilingual team members and sales collateral. Truth is, healthcare needs and preferences differ dramatically between ethnicities and cultures. From both a payor and provider perspective, both lenses through which I've observed care, it's clear (no pun intended)that we have to do much more from a clinical and operating perspective to effectively serve diverse populations.

Governor Tina Kotek officially recognized last week's American Optometric Association's InfantSEE week activities. This nationwide public health program, supported by the Oregon Optometric Physician's Association, helps parents of infants between 6-12 months old get a one-time, no cost vision evaluation for their child at a participating provider. Early exams are a critical component in insuring lifelong eye health, and early diagnosis of visual anomaly.

Last Friday, Geisinger College of Health Sciences hosted the Susquehanna Valley Rural Regional Healthcare Summit, convening leaders across sectors to tackle urgent health challenges in our region. Primary care providers are the backbone of our healthcare system, especially those serving rural communities where access can be a challenge. At Geisinger College of Health Sciences, we’re investing in the future of primary care through initiatives like the Abigail Geisinger Scholars Program, which offers full tuition and living stipends to medical students who commit to practicing primary care or psychiatry with Geisinger. These scholars are already making an impact in communities like Tunkhannock and Buckhorn. As our population ages, the need for accessible, relationship-based care grows. Primary care physicians are uniquely equipped to deliver the kind of comprehensive, personalized care that supports healthy aging — focusing on what matters most to each patient. We’re proud to train physicians who are not only clinically excellent but also deeply engaged in their communities.
Healthcare, community and government leaders came together to explore solutions for strengthening rural life in central Pennsylvania. From elder care and behavioral health to workforce development and lifestyle medicine, the event fostered collaboration and actionable ideas to build healthier, more vibrant communities.

It’s Day 3 of our annual LGBTQIA+ Oral Health Week, and today’s topic is “Engaging Queer People in Oral Health Research.” LGBTQIA+ metrics have been left out of national oral health surveillance systems for decades, creating a lag in our ability to understand and respond to oral healthcare needs. The reality is: we need more research, and we need to keep LGBTQIA+ metrics in our national health surveillance systems. With support from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), earlier this year, AIDPH released a national research agenda and call to action for the oral health community to increase research that evaluates clinical and community needs for LGBTQIA+ people. Today, we examine the process of building and increasing capacity for veteran oral health, which involves oral health professionals and a diverse range of stakeholders committed to sharing strategies and advancing solutions. In 2024, AIDPH convened a group of stakeholders in Iowa, including government representatives, public health advocates, U.S. veterans, and other community members, to brainstorm ways to improve the state of veterans' health in Iowa. The conclusion: Stakeholders in Iowa can improve the oral health and well-being of veterans by investing in strategic opportunities to improve access and quality of care.
