Airbus Geospatial and Secure Connectivity Solutions’ Post

Snow-kiting across the Antarctic Continent — The journey begins! ❄️ On 3 November, 2025, the scientific expedition Under Antarctica set out on an extraordinary journey. Dr. Heïdi Sevestre, glaciologist and Matthieu Tordeur, polar explorer, will travel 4,000 km across Antarctica, passing through the South Pole, on a mission to conduct scientific research on how the polar continent is responding to climate change. 🌬️⛷️ By towing a ground-penetrating radar, they will map the layers of subsurface ice along their route to better understand the Antarctic ice sheet’s evolution. Thanks to snow-kiting, they are pioneering a low carbon method to conduct science in polar environments. Airbus is proud to support this expedition with its space technologies for mapping and connectivity, helping advance both exploration and climate research. • Dr. Heidi Sylvestre and polar explorer Matthieu Tordeur set off on the Under Antarctica expedition, a bold adventure of science, resilience and discovery, three years in the making.
For the next three months, they’ll kite-ski 4,000 km across Antarctica, towing Ground Penetrating Radars to better understand how the ice sheet is changing and what it reveals about our planet’s climate.
