Proud to Announce Our Latest Research Milestone! Our project titled “AI-Driven Prediction and Microstructural Analysis of Low Cycle Fatigue in Hybrid Aluminium Composites” has been selected for financial support of ₹4.5 Lakh under the MITS Research Seed Money Scheme. This initiative aims to integrate artificial intelligence techniques with materials engineering to enhance predictive modelling and microstructural understanding of composite materials under fatigue conditions. Happy to share our recent paper out in Journal of Membrane Science, entitled "Developing and validating a high-throughput robotic system for the accelerated development of porous membranes." This one was led by superstar Hongchen Wang, who is co-advised by Jason Hattrick-Simpers and me. JMS link: https://lnkd.in/g5pV5nkj Hongchen built a robotic system to automate lab-scale non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS), which is the industrial standard method to make porous membranes. This was a huge project, taking Hongchen and several undergraduate researchers about 2 years. At this stage, Hongchen has validated that it can reproducibly synthesize membranes and characterize them using compression testing. Our goal is to use the system as a closed-loop "self-driving lab" to accelerate the development of porous membranes through NIPS, with our main focus being on compression-resistant membranes for high-pressure and osmotically-assisted RO. We aim to close this loop over the next 6 months or so, which to our knowledge, will be the first self-driving lab in membrane science. Hongchen was helped by grad students Sima Zeinali and Jiahao Zhu and a series of top-notch undergrads---Kenneth Sulimro, Chaewon Lim, Smita Basak, Aimée Tai, and Usan Siriwardana. Madanu, Bao-Lian Su, Olivier Deparis in Journal of Energy Chemistry In this work, the authors explore how TiO₂–BiVO₄ inverse-opal (3D photonic crystal) architectures enhance solar-light harvesting and boost photocatalytic performance. Their advanced computational simulations provide fresh insights into light–matter interactions in these structures and offer practical design guidelines for the next generation of efficient solar-driven photocatalysts. Research papers we love 🔬 📄 Targeted materials discovery using Bayesian algorithm execution. 👥 Sathya R. Chitturi, Akash Ramdas, Yue Wu, Brian Rohr, Stefano Ermon, Jennifer Dionne, Felipe H. da Jornada, Mike Dunne, Christopher Tassone, Willie Neiswanger, and Daniel Ratner. Rapid discovery and synthesis of future materials requires intelligent data acquisition strategies to navigate large design spaces. A popular strategy is Bayesian optimization, which aims to find candidates that maximize material properties; however, materials design often requires finding specific subsets of the design space which meet more complex or specialized goals. We present a framework that captures experimental goals through straightforward user-defined filtering algorithms. These algorithms are automatically translated into one of three intelligent, parameter-free, sequential data collection strategies (SwitchBAX, InfoBAX, and MeanBAX), bypassing the time-consuming and difficult process of task-specific acquisition function design. Our framework is tailored for typical discrete search spaces involving multiple measured physical properties and short time-horizon decision making. We demonstrate this approach on datasets for TiO2 nanoparticle synthesis and magnetic materials characterization, and show that our methods are significantly more efficient than state-of-the-art approaches. Overall, our framework provides a practical solution for navigating the complexities of materials design, and helps lay groundwork for the accelerated development of advanced materials.
