Recently, the wellness world was shaken by the announcement of Tom Brady joining Aescape as Chief Innovation Officer, in a strategic move to bring its technology to sports teams and new areas of wellbeing.
For those who don’t know yet, Aescape is a tech company that has developed a robotic massage table equipped with mechanical arms, sensors, artificial intelligence, and a digital interface.
The promise?
A fully personalized, on-demand massage experience where the user sets the pressure, rhythm, focus areas, and duration — without necessarily relying on a human therapist.
It’s a bold move: the company has already partnered with wellness clubs and luxury hotels, installing its tables in spaces where the wellness experience itself is a differentiating asset.
For a moment, I hesitated and thought: What? Hold on…
The massage therapist that still resides in me instantly felt a shoulder tension just by imagining the impact of such a novelty. With a hint of skepticism, my first reaction was:
Interesting. But come on, it will never replace the human touch.
Yet, as a spa consultant, I started to think how this innovation could fit into different contexts:
- Could it complement traditional experiences?
- Would it fit in small spaces?
- And about ROI?
- It reduces the therapists in spas?
Geez…
Amidst those reflections, I realized something powerful:
The universal dream of every massage therapist is, one day, to receive their own massage… and with this technology, that dream may finally become reality.
Seen from this angle, the machine stopped being the “two-clawed monster” and became a true “Aescape” — not a threat, but an opportunity to fulfill an old and utopian dream.
And that’s when I started to reflect on the many possibilities of this unlikely friendship between humans and machines, and now AI, and how it might redefine and expand the boundaries of wellness in the years to come.
💭 What about you? Does this kind of innovation scare you, or excite you? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
