New features in Windows 11 in 2024

- This course covers Windows 11, including the updates that were added in October of 2024. This is sometimes referred to as version 24H2. I want to show a quick overview of some of the changes and new features in this version, and I think the biggest changes are found in Copilot. Over the last year, some users have been able to use the Copilot AI assistant integrated into Windows, but it was still classified as a preview feature. Now, Copilot is no longer a preview feature and its interface has changed. I see the Copilot button in the task bar, but now Copilot is a standalone application, so this button is just a shortcut to that Copilot application, which we can find by going to the Start menu and to the list of all apps and I could launch Copilot from here. And you can use Copilot to ask questions, make requests, or simply have a conversation with the artificial intelligence assistant. In this application window, you can easily see your conversation history on the left, and you can move the window around, or even use the Snap Assist feature to show it in a split screen view with other applications. I'm excited to show you how Copilot works in detail later in this course. In Windows, we use File Explorer to browse through the files and folders on our storage drive. The design and layout has changed a bit in this updated version. You may notice that the folder icons and shortcuts on the left side look a little different, more consistent and streamlined. Also, if you right click on a file or folder, this right click menu has been improved. In last year's version of Windows 11, there were small icons up at the top for things like copy, paste, rename, and delete. Now, those buttons have labels which make them much easier to identify. Do you ever create zip files to bundle several files together or unzip package files that people send to you? Well, now Windows can create and extract other types of package files. In a folder with several files, I can select the files that I want, then right click on those selected files and go to Compress to. In the past, Windows could create zip files, but if you wanted to work with 7-Zip or tar files, you had to install a third party application. But now you can package files together or even open 7-Zip and tar files natively in Windows. You can even choose Additional options for more specific control over how your archived files are created and compressed. In the bottom right corner of the task bar, you can click this cluster of two or three icons to open the Quick Settings panel, which gives you quick access to some of the computer's most important settings. Now, there's a subtle but very useful difference. Instead of having to configure the Quick Settings panel to show the settings that you want to use, you can just scroll up and down on this list. So all of the quick settings options are always available, you just have to scroll to find them. Now, finally, you may have heard of other new features coming to Windows 11 for a special new class of computers known as Copilot+ PCs. These computers have special processors built in called the NPU, which enables AI-based features. One of those new features, which we will see in this course, is the option to have real-time translations for live captions. Live captions can display text on your screen like subtitles when you play audio on your computer. Live captions work on all Windows computers, but Copilot+ PCs have the ability to also translate those captions when it hears audio from another language. Since live captions are a standard feature that we will cover in this course, we will also see how the translation feature works on Copilot+ PCs in that video. For these other features, there is a separate course on LinkedIn Learning all about Copilot+ PCs. Be sure to check out that course to learn more about those special AI-based features. So, that's a quick introduction to the biggest new features in Windows 11 from the update in the fall of 2024. We will spend much more time going through the details of how many of these new features work as we go through the rest of this course.
