Add your voice to industry conversations

- Consistently sharing your take on industry trends helps position you as a leading voice in your field. People aren't just looking for headlines. They want real opinions, unique takeaways and insights from experts. So for example, if you're an engineering manager, maybe you're gonna share how AI coding tools are changing the way your teams are building software right now. Or if you're a nonprofit leader, maybe you reflect on how Gen Z's donation habits are shaping the future of fundraising campaigns. A couple of good questions to guide your posts here. What news or trends do your customers or colleagues need to understand to make smart decisions today? What are people in your network always asking for your perspective on? To talk more about industry trends, I had a chat with my friend Arjun, an expert in the D2C startup space. I would love to know a little bit, first, like what brought you to start sharing industry commentary on LinkedIn? How did you get into that in the first place? - The time I created my first post actually was in COVID. I was running a health supplements business and we were one of the few businesses that was open at that time. And I thought it'd be an interesting story to share how a business stays open and how you get your product, your customers. That's what I started posting about and that's what got me into this. So I think you can start by finding that one thing that gets you going. And it may take some time, but once you start you just gotta keep going. - And how has posting industry insights helped you professionally - As a venture capitalist now, it allows me to establish context with founders very easily. And the greatest part is because I create content when I like what a founders doing and I write to them on LinkedIn or cold DM, my response rate has gone from two out of 10 before I was creating content to eight out of 10. And so I that context because you seen as voice and expert in that industry. - And how do you decide what trends or topics to weigh in on? - I am very specific about my LinkedIn content in that it has to reflect who I am. So I do post about the consumer industry. I do post about D2C, I do post about venture capital, but I also post a lot about sports and fitness because that's the person I am. It's gotta be your personality and you. - What advice would you give to other experts who want to start adding their voice to industry conversations? - One piece of advice. The best way to start is to start. Even if you can't write a post, start writing comments, write longer comments. Start engaging with people that will get you to feel a bit more comfortable on the platform. And once you get going and you have that one post that does well and people talk to you about it, I think you are on your way. - Amazing insights from Arjun. If you're not sure where to find this industry news to comment on a couple of places to start. You can pay attention of course to conversations happening at industry events or ones that you read about. I also recommend you follow publications relevant to your industry or see what other experts are talking about on LinkedIn in your space and in some regions, you can actually also check out your local LinkedIn news module for recent stories about your industry or area. And if you're wondering, Sarah, what is a LinkedIn news module? Don't worry, we'll talk more about that soon.
