What is user equipment?

(bright music) - [Instructor] So far, we have focused on how telecom networks have evolved from second generation to fifth generation and even beyond. But now let's talk about the other side of the equation, which are the devices that connect to these networks commonly referred as a user equipment, or UE. Just as networks have transformed, so too must the devices we use to connect to them. In the early days of mobile communication, devices were basic handset designed mainly for voice calls, text messages. These handsets were simple, had limited processing power, and didn't need to support high speed data or complex applications. Now with the introduction of 3G, and later 4G, the demand for more advanced features skyrocketed. And we see the emergence of smartphones, which are capable of Internet browsing, video calling, app-based functionality, support for multimedia, like high-definition video streaming, social media, online gaming has increased drastically.
