2G: GSM and GPRS network architecture
(upbeat music) - [Instructor] Let's take a step back and explore the roots of mobile communication architecture. We are starting with second generation, which is GSM, which is first global standard for digital, mobile voice, and moving to GPRS, which is 2.5 G, which marked the introduction of data services. In GSM, the architecture was circuit switched and voice centric, so we had three main components, which is mobile station, we have the access network, and then we have the core network. So here in the RAN or the radio access network, we have different base station, which we call as base trans receiver station BTS, which sends and receive signal from the mobile devices. We then have the base station controller, which is PSC, which manages and controlling the different base stations. We then have a core network, which is in this case, first we are talking about the circuit switched domain, which is centered around the MSC, which is mobile switching center.
