Avoid stating the obvious
- When you interact with a worker with a disability they are not reliant on you to bring to their attention the fact that they live with said disability or disabilities. In other words, they are already aware of the fact that they have a disability. So ask yourself, is it relevant to mention it? The short answer is likely to be no, especially if this is your first time meeting or interacting with them. For example, when meeting an individual with limb difference, a common faux pas is for people to say, "oh you only have one hand." My question to you is, what is the point in vocalizing that observation? I'd put a large amount of money on the fact that the individual in question didn't leave their home with two hands that morning, lose it on the way, but continue onto the meeting. So when being asked that question, how is the individual supposed to respond? Why thank you for bringing that to my attention. Yes, I know.…
