- There's something in corporate America called layering. That means that you put a new manager on top of an existing employee, and that employee now reports to them instead of you. The reason you layer someone is often because they help the department get bigger or more successful. But they aren't equipped to handle the new responsibilities of a bigger, more complex department. So this should be a good thing. We're successful, and we have a more experienced leader coming in. But most often, the person getting layered feels upset and resentful. They feel they're getting demoted. So the way you frame this is important. Here's a script you can use.
