How to use the Complex category
- Complex modes combine the power of both subtractive and editing modes, resulting in compositions with depth, contrast, and nuanced vibrancy. How these blending modes behave will depend on whether one of the colors is lighter than 50% gray and whether it's on the top or the bottom clip. Let's start with overlay. The overlay blending mode will make both the darks darker and the lights lighter depending on what's in the underlying layer. I like to use it to sharpen otherwise dull scenes. Let's go ahead and open sequence 5.5, How to use the complex category. Place your playhead on top of the first set of clips. Now change the blending mode of the top clip to Overlay. Much better, right? You can now duplicate the top layer more times and get an even more pronounced effect. The next blending mode is Soft Light.
