Making performance reviews effective
- Performance reviews can feel like a formality, something you just have to get through. But when you do them right, employees see that you care about their growth, and in turn, they care even more about their work and their careers. The first key is preparation. Take the time to reflect on the employee's work over the entire review period, not just the last few weeks or months. One of the best ways to do this is to keep ongoing notes throughout the year, write down their impacts, skills they've learned, projects they've driven, and moments where they stepped up. That way when review time comes, you're not scrambling for examples. You already have real moments to draw from. Make sure every statement you make is tied to objective examples that would make sense to someone else looking in. If you say someone's a strong communicator, you should be able to point to projects, presentations, or teamwork that showed it, and if you're raising a concern, you should be able to explain what…
