Comparing proportions
- [Instructor] Analyzing proportions is an important part of understanding data. While pie charts and its hollow counterpart, the donut chart, are proportional visual offerings, I avoid them for a number of reasons. For this particular pie chart, how can we tell which slice is the smallest? Humans are less perceptive of shape than they are of size. While the slices of a pie or donut chart do have different sizes, they're hard to compare. I personally don't use pie charts because they're difficult to read and decipher sections, especially when the pieces get small like this. So instead use bar charts to compare proportions. We can line them up horizontally or vertically to see how the actual sizes stack up and continue our analysis from there. Let's say we want to visualize the proportion of the U.S. population who lived in the Western United States over the last 50 years. We can use 100% stacked column chart to visualize…
