Activating your weaknesses for growth
Constantly working on improving weaknesses is exhausting. It's a slow struggle that stifles motivation and can divert attention from developing strengths. When it comes to dealing with weaknesses, you really just have two smart options. Mitigate; lessen a weakness's impact by avoiding it or delegating it. Or manage; improve a weakness, but only if it obstructs you from achieving your goals or is crucial to your role. Here's what I invite you to do. List your weaknesses in a notebook. Divide the next page in half. In the left column, write weaknesses that can be mitigated, avoided, or delegated. And in the other, write those that you'll manage because they're important to your role or career. For every weakness on the left, decide how you'll mitigate it. Then for each weakness in the manage column, create an action plan. What specific steps will you take to develop a level of competence so that it won't hinder your progress? And next time you're trying to decide whether to focus on developing a weakness, ask, "Is this important for my role or my goals?" If it's not, don't bother.
