Using language for growth

The language you use to speak to yourself has a huge impact on your ability to persist, stay motivated, and maintain a growth mindset. When talking to yourself about things you need to get done, here are two important language shifts to help with motivation. First, say, I get to, instead of ,I have to. Your life isn't an obligation. It's an opportunity. You don't have to go to work to the gym or to do the groceries. You choose to do these things because it pays your bills, keeps you fit, and keeps you fed. When we say we have to do something, it's demotivating, and reflect a negative emotional connection with whatever we are referring to. Second, instead of, I should, tell yourself, I will. The word should is guilt laden, implying obligation, and that we're falling short of an expectation instead a shift to, I will. This gives you an action orientation and focuses you on moving forward, which is important for a growth mindset.
