Responding to compliments with a growth mindset

Do you struggle with accepting compliments or positive feedback? Does it make you cringe just a little? You're not alone. In a study reported in Harvard Business Review, nearly 70% of people associate feelings of embarrassment or discomfort with recognition or receiving a compliment. But a compliment is an opportunity to recognize growth in yourself and the effort applied. So here's how to take a compliment with a growth mindset. Realize that someone is paying you a compliment. It's a good thing. Let them finish. Maintain composure and offer gratitude. Take a breath. Smile at them and say, "thanks," or, "I appreciate that." Reinforce the effort applied to get there. This is important. I was determined to deliver a stand out presentation. I invested a lot of time into preparation. Or I really enjoyed that this project allowed me to lean on my strengths. Don't overexplain. Don't undermine yourself. Don't deflect. Just thank the person sincerely and reinforce the effort you applied. Easy.
