From the course: Nano Tips to Enhance Your Communication with Shadé Zahrai

Responding positively

When someone tells you something you already know, you might default to, 'I know.' Instead, try, 'that's right.' It comes across as more collaborative. For example, if you want to get the report done faster, you should try spending less time on preparation. I know. That's right. It's something I've been thinking about. I'm still getting used to the new system, so I want to be as prepared as possible, but I might try that soon. 'I know' can reflect that you're not open to the perspective of others. It can sometimes be taken to reflect a degree of incompetence. You knew, but you didn't do. And it can even invalidate someone else, especially when they're excited to share what they're sharing. Replying with, 'that's right' helps you build on the conversation, justify your course of action if that helps and encourages greater collaboration.
