Visualizing obstacles
- You might have been told to visualize yourself achieving your goals, but here's why that may not be the best advice. A 2011 study found that indulging in a desired future visualization actually saps your energy. And other studies have found that doing that predicts poor achievement. So rather than only imagining yourself suddenly successful, you need to also imagine the effort required to get there. Here's how. Step one, anticipate friction. What challenges am I likely to face? It might be responding to failure, dealing with disapproval from others on the journey, or even getting bored. Step two, plan your solutions by creating your if then plan. If this happens, then I will fill in the blank. Visualize yourself facing these challenges and working through them. Research confirms this is a powerful way to become comfortable with risks and to gear yourself towards action.
