Managing interrupters
- Have you ever felt unheard and frustrated as you struggle to get a word in edgewise in a group or one-to-one setting? Interruptions can be aggressive, malicious, and incessant. But don't worry, with these phrases, you can effectively prevent the interruptions and regain control of the conversation. First, respectfully assert yourself by saying, "I noticed you keep interrupting. Is there something you need to get off your chest briefly before I continue?"` If the interrupter persists, calmly state, "It seems that you have something very important to share, but if we keep talking over each other, neither of us will be able to communicate what we want to say. As I've already started, how about I finish my thought, and then you'll be able to share your thoughts uninterrupted." Good communication requires both listening and being heard. So if you are ever the one who's interrupting, apologize and say, "I'm sorry I interrupted you. Please go on." By modeling the behavior you wish to see, you can create a more respectful and productive conversation.
