Diffusing conflict by calling out the core issue

- When it comes to handling tension, calling out the core issue can be a key to success. When emotions are boiling over, it's easy for things to spiral out of control, but your secret weapon is directness. It's like taking a balloon that's near bursting point and releasing some air. Here's an example. Let's say you're having trouble working with a colleague. You've tried to empathize, understand, and change your own behavior, but nothing's worked. Try calling out the elephant in the room. Instead of avoiding the issue, confront it head on and redirect the conversation towards finding a solution. You could say something like "We don't have to like each other, but we still need to get our work done together. What's the best way we can achieve that?" Or, "It's clear we have differing opinions, but let's agree to disagree and still work towards our goal. How could we do that effectively?" This simple, direct approach will keep everyone focused on the goal, reduce tension, and help you get the job done.
