Calling a time out when you need to cool down
- When conflicts start to escalate, taking a moment to pause and reflect can work wonders. A brief break can help everyone involved to cool down and clear their minds. If you need time to digest what's being said, simply ask for a moment by saying, "Can I take a moment to think about that?" Or, "I need to process that for a moment." If the situation isn't progressing, and either you or the other person feel overwhelmed, suggest a timeout and set a time to continue. For example, can we take a break and reconvene at 2:00 PM? Or, let's take a 10 minute break and come back with fresh perspectives. Then explain why, but focus on yourself. I want to be more clearheaded for our discussion, or I need more time to fully understand your point of view. When asking for time or a break, remain respectful and professional. This demonstrates your emotional intelligence and promotes greater understanding.
