Choosing words that foster collaboration
There are seemingly harmless common words that you might be using in conversation and email without realizing how they negatively influence your reputation and undermine your relationships. I can't. Nothing comes across as more of a can't do attitude than responding with how you can't do something. So rather than focusing on limitations or restrictions, try emphasizing what is possible. I can't do Mondays. I can do anytime after Tuesday. I can't meet that deadline. I'll need some extra help to get it done on time. Unfortunately. Using unfortunately can unintentionally amplify the negative impact of news, making it seem more disappointing or disheartening. Unfortunately, we didn't meet this month's sales target. We didn't meet the sales target, so let's use what we learned to improve next month's performance. Simple tweaks, big impact.
