Rewiring your brain for action

- I can tell if you're likely to procrastinate based on your valence weighting bias. In other words, how you naturally weigh the negatives against the positives. New research shows that we often delay tasks when we focus more on the negatives, like the discomfort or the boredom, over the positives, like the relief and the satisfaction of finishing. Here's how it works: When faced with a task, your brain instinctively asks, "Do I want to do this now?" Then it weighs the pros and the cons. If your valence weighting is more negative, the cons get heavier, making it easier to put things off. But if you're naturally tuned to focus on the positives, you are more likely to dive in. So to shift this bias, take a quick pause before you decide to delay, ask yourself, "What are some more positive reasons to get started?" Consciously adding to the pros list can help ease the initial friction and make it easier to actually get started.
