- [Instructor] Many years ago, I had a two-week contract at this company, fairly local to where I lived in those days. And the IT support person, and I think he was the only guy there, was going on holiday for a couple of weeks, and I was stepping in. One of the things he wanted me to work on while I was away was the reconfiguration of all of the devices on the network to start using TCP/IP, I mean, perhaps that's why he was going on vacation. The process to be used was to write down the IP configuration I'd allocated on a piece of paper, and then move to the next device, and then the next device in turn. That was torturous, because there was a large number of devices, but also error prone, highly possible that I would've made a mistake. One of the great things about Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, DHCP, is that it provides IP addresses automatically from a valid pool of addresses.
