- Welcome back. This is Lesson 6.1: Apply a data classification strategy. Data classification, or better yet, data discovery and classification, is a new data and information protection model for SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, and Azure SQL Managed Instance with the ultimate goal of protecting data. Data discovery and classification includes the following tenants. Discovery. The classification engine scans your database and identifies columns containing potentially sensitive data. It then provides you an easy way to review and apply the appropriate classification recommendations, as well as to manually classify columns. You can then add classification labels through the use of metadata attributes that can help describe the data to be used in different scenarios, such as auditing. You can view the database classification state in a detailed dashboard. This information can be used for compliance and auditing purposes.
