- [Instructor] In the 1960s, the public switched telephone network became digital. The network supports a bandwidth of 64 kilobits per second, and limits the frequency to the voice band range, which is 300 to 3,300 hertz. In 1975, the phone system developed Signaling System 7 control system, or simply SS7. SS7 is a set of signaling protocols, used to set up and tear down calls, and is the basis of call routing for most of the world's calls. The public switched telephone network and SS7 integrate with one another with the help of a signaling gateway. Nodes in an SS7 network are signaling points. The three kinds of signaling points are Switching Service Point, Signal Transfer Point, and Service Control Point. The Switching Service Point is the central office that carries the messages through the public switched telephone network onto the SS7 network.
