Body language and approachability

- Approachability is only partially about the words that you use. Sometimes your body language has even more impact, but we're often unaware of it, and you may be sending cues inadvertently. Here are three things to keep in mind. First, the one that perhaps gets the most attention is eye contact. We know it's important. We're biologically and culturally programmed to consider it important, but there's a recent impediment, and that is your cell phone. Often these days, people are looking down and checking messages or shutting off alerts or browsing the internet, even when people are talking to them. Your eyes are the clearest tell about where your attention really is. People notice, and if you're distracted and looking elsewhere, they'll notice, and oftentimes feel insulted as a result. Next, there's your smile or lack thereof.
