From the course: Learning Notion

Set up Notion

- [Instructor] If you want to start working with Notion, you should start on their website, notion.so. Now, before we set up an account, I want to click on this link at the top for Pricing, and we can see the different pricing tiers listed here. And this is important. If you are using Notion by yourself and never sharing your content with anybody else, then the free individual plan may be all you ever need. I think the main things that separate the free plan from the others are the sharing and collaboration features. All of these plans will allow you to set up a team and share Notion content with teammates, but the free plan has some limitations. When we go to one of the paid plans, you'll see that it includes unlimited blocks of content for teams. This is an important detail. When you learn Notion, you'll see that all of your content is stored in blocks. So while the free plan does let you set up a team, it limits the amount of content you can share in that team. It basically lets you try the team setup on a trial basis to see if you like it. But to remove the limit on your team content, you may need to upgrade to one of these other plans. So technically, we will be able to do everything in this course using the free plan, but depending on the type of work you do, you may need to upgrade. And you can always start with the free plan and upgrade later if you need to. Now, scrolling down a bit, you can see there's also an option for the Notion AI add-on. In this course, we will see how to use the artificial intelligence tools in Notion. And no matter which plan you choose above, it will limit the number of AI requests you can do. So, again, it's like using it on a trial basis. It's enough to learn the features in this course, but if you want to continue using the AI features beyond that, you may want to pay for this add-on. So, if you're ready to get started, you could click on any of the links here that say Get started. Or if we go back to the main page, you can log in if you already have an account. Or if you need to set up an account, you can click Get Notion for free. Now, when you make an account, you can just put in your email address and then it will walk you through the normal process of setting up an account. Or if you already have a Google account, which you might use for Gmail or Google Drive, or an Apple ID, which you might use for iCloud, then you can use one of those existing accounts to sign in so you don't have to register a new name and password. These options are all pretty straightforward, but there's one important thing I want to point out if you're going to use this Continue with Apple option. So I'm going to sign in and create my account that way. So I'll click on that. And of course, I'll need to put in the Apple ID email address that I plan to use. (keyboard clacking) Then click Next and put in my password. Then I'll click Continue. And here's the thing I wanted to point out. If you are signing in with an Apple account, it may ask you if you want to use the Hide My Email option. That's a nice privacy feature from Apple, but it will probably introduce some problems with Notion's sharing system if anybody ever shares Notion content with you or adds you as a team member. So it's best to use your real, normal email address, not the private address that the Hide My Email feature would use to sign you in. So I'm going to choose my normal email address, then I'll click Continue. And if you're not using the sign in with Apple option, you don't need to worry about this. So I'll just click Continue and finish setting up my account. For now, I'm just going to use Notion for personal use, then click Continue. And for now, I'm just going to click Skip on this screen. And click OK here. And now we are in Notion. So, you can use Notion in a web browser like this, or you can click your name up in the top left corner and you'll see there's an option to download and install the full application. Now, I'm on a Windows computer, but if you are working on a Mac, it would say Get Mac app here. So you can download and install that application, then sign in with the account that you just set up. But there really is not much difference between using Notion on the web or using the full application, so you can use whichever you prefer. And there are mobile apps on both iOS and Androids, so you can install those for free and sign in to your account there as well. But finally, I want to click where it says Settings & members on the left side, and it's important to know where your settings are in general, but you should see if I click where it says Upgrade over on the left, we saw these options before. These are those upgrade options. So if you just set up a free account and later decide that you need to upgrade to one of these other plans, you can do that from here. But for now, I have my personal account set up and I can get started in Notion.
