- Leaders change everything. When I was still in school and working at my first few part-time jobs, I started to notice the influence of leaders. At one job, I remember looking at the schedule on the wall to see which of the four supervisors I would be working with that week. I could practically predict how those shifts would go ahead of time, based upon the leadership approach of each supervisor. I could tell in advance, for instance, that if Mike was in charge, the shift would be filled with team spirit and the work would be enjoyable, no matter how busy it was. In contrast, if I saw another supervisor was working, I knew in advance that the shift would likely be draining and everything would feel more difficult than it needed to be. This taught me that leaders can transform the atmosphere. Leadership is contagious, for better or for worse. Leaders have a disproportionate influence on how everybody experiences life on the team.
