Visual cues of nostalgia
- Tapping into nostalgia as a healthy and positive emotion is an enormous benefit for designers, marketers, and advertising. Here, design connects to the idea of the past, not reality. But what does nostalgia look like? It varies based on the audience. My grandparents looked to turn-of-the-20th-century, small town America for nostalgia. My generation loved all things mid-century, and my college-age students looked back at new-wave 1980s and 90s grunge as a better time. Although the subject matter and style changes, the message has always been consistent. This represents a time when life was easier, safer, and less complicated. For example, the population in the 1950s and 60s dealt with the stresses of the Cold War, urbanization, changing family structures, politics and globalization.
