- Function in design may seem to address only the practical needs of the user or viewer. I expect a well-designed set of directions or a table that doesn't wobble. But functionality, performance, effectiveness, and sustainability create a positive emotion with lasting effects. Now, when a design solution succeeds, the viewer feels connected and confident. He or she is reassured the effort to understand a message or use a product was worth the trouble. An efficient solution builds trust each time the viewer interacts with it. In the 1960's, America and the Soviet Union raced to be the first country to land on the moon. The American public had romantic visions of the daring journey and a space age rocket.
