How to be funny
- There will always be curmudgeons who insist that design is serious, and there is no room for frivolity. Yes, design is a serious business, but that doesn't mean design can't be fun. At times, there may be no deep and meaningful message. Laughter can exist, like art, for its own sake. Well-placed humor elevates a mundane process to the memorable. Here are a few examples that demonstrate the power of humor in situations, typically, unfunny. Paula Scher's signage for a New York parking garage asks the obvious question on the building's Scrabble-like window pattern. The typography tells the viewer, this parking garage is friendlier than the others down the street. Humor becomes a unique selling proposition while adding a moment of delight in the tedious process of finding a parking spot.
