What is benchmarking?
- [Instructor] Benchmarking is an old surveying technique that uses physical markers placed at known elevations against which other measurements are compared. Likewise in software, benchmarks are a measure of software performance against which other software can be compared. In many cases, benchmarking allows us to check our assumptions. As developers, we can often have preconceived notions of how programs behave, but with modern operating systems, CPUs and compilers, sometimes the results we observe can be counterintuitive. The only way to ensure that our software is behaving the way we expect is to benchmark it. Once we've established a baseline or benchmark, we can make changes in meaningfully compare functional units of code based on their measured performance. Ultimately, benchmarks help developers make data-driven decisions about how performance critical code should change.
