Best practices for process mapping, part 1

- It's really easy to draw bad process maps. Most mapping styles have very few rules beyond the meaning of the shapes. Consequently, the software you use to create the map and the way you link shapes together and arrange them on the page is completely up to you. My first recommendation is this. Don't create process maps in Excel, PowerPoint, or Word, or they're non-Microsoft equivalents. I know it's tempting because you already have those products and it is possible to use them to create flowcharts, but please don't. Instead, use one of the many free or moderate cost diagramming applications that are much better suited to this purpose. My second recommendation is to test your map design with key constituents before you get too far along. No matter how much a particular map style and configuration appeals to you, the opinions of your audience are much more important.
