- Before explaining how Snowflake is priced and how usage is measured, we need to understand how traditional databases set their prices. Let's borrow our car analogy one more time. Imagine you're buying a car, you pay a high upfront cost, and then there's the maintenance, insurance, and, of course, fuel. This is how traditional databases charge, upfront licensing fees, recurring maintenance charges, and infrastructure costs, not to mention you're stuck with the car whether you drive it a mile or 1,000. Now, picture a futuristic car. It only charges you when you drive and can magically adjust to fit as many passengers as you need, or change the size of the engine to go faster when you need it. And when you're not using it, it costs nothing. What a world. Well, it sounds a little far-fetched, but that's exactly how Snowflake works. Let's break it down with a bit more detail.
