Correct mistakes without killing motivation
Mistakes do happen. The question is, do you shut people down or help coach them through it? Across every front line job, what keeps a team motivated is knowing that their leader believes in them enough to help them improve. How do you give feedback that motivates? First, start with the right mindset. You have somebody on your team that doesn't have ill will. They have the right intent. They just didn't know exactly how to execute. Start with that mindset and then just give direct, helpful feedback on how to improve next time, not focusing on what the result was this time. The first thing you should say to somebody when they make a mistake is counterintuitive. I start with thanking them. I'm thanking them because they are trying to execute on the task I've given them. They maybe just didn't do it the way I want it. So I start by saying, “Hey, thanks for taking that on.” Then I roll into, “Let me give you a couple tips,” or “Here's what I noticed that could have been better.” By saying…
