- Data is an asset, just like a building, a factory, or a fleet of trucks, it has intrinsic value. So like anything of value, it deserves to be safeguarded. That's where data governance comes in. Data governance is where the technology and the people come together. A firm grasp of data governance gives you a seat at the top most table of data management, policy creation, strategy development, this is C-suite stuff. At the hands-on level data governance is the rules and regulations and guidelines about how data is treated, how carefully it's collected, connected, and protected. It's the manual that spells out technical requirements, privacy constraints, and access controls. Technical requirements are the standards you set to say whenever you capture somebody's postal code, it must be stored in the proper text and number format depending on the country.
