Creating a data-driven culture

- All the data in the world and all the best technology on the planet are only the flour and sugar in the data literacy cake. A lot of other ingredients are necessary to make the cake rise, hold together, and taste great. To become a data enriched organization, a cultural change might be required. If the top executive rose through the ranks through good luck, good timing, and good instincts, they expect everybody else to do the same and discount the data. That makes it tough for anybody below them to rely on data, much less let the data speak for itself. If, however, the top executives are open to listen to anybody's opinion as long as it's backed by solid data, the rest of the firm will follow suit and make a point of having the numbers to back them up. Start by assessing where your company, department, or team sits on the data literacy spectrum. At one end are the data deniers who do not accept the purpose and the use of data.
