Use letter writing to encourage your directs

- I believe everyone wants to be seen, known and valued. One of my favorite things to do each December is write a letter to each of my direct reports. I remember my first Christmas at the Santa Barbara Zoo and I received one such letter from our CEO. It was a full page, single space. And after a paragraph about zoo wide success, I read two paragraphs detailing my unique contribution toward that success. It was commendation and encouragement. It connected to real goals I achieved, it had people I hired in it and projects that I had supported. I lit up and then I got one the next year. And then I got one the next year. A few years in, following my own 360 review, I learned that while I was managing up and across pretty well, my team felt pretty abandoned.
