Open communication between layers

- It amazes me how frequently people with good intentions can communicate in ways that still lead to confusion and suspicion within organizations. In consulting engagements and my own work at the Santa Barbara Zoo, I frequently see well-intentioned people with strong communication skills miss opportunities to share information widely or include the relevant players. I'm learning this is a structural problem. Like seeds, trust needs certain conditions to grow. For seeds, this looks like rich soil, the right amount of sunlight, proper irrigation. Cultivating trust also requires certain structural elements, a healthy environment, and open connections. Every organization is a little different, but one change I've seen that tends to help all organizations build trust is prioritizing openness between layers and functions.
