Build social capital

- In her book "Dare to Lead", sociologists, Brené Brown equates trust-building to marbles in a jar. It's a great analogy. I wish we could trust folks when we first meet them. I'm just not sure it's possible because that's not really how trust works. Trust grows from our beliefs. When someone new joins your team, your beliefs about that person are mostly guesses. They're what you expect or what you hope. Then you fill in the gaps for the things that you don't know. Limited experience with someone translates to limit it, or what I call thin trust. This is trust that's like a tree with shallow roots. As your experience with someone grows, you clarify beliefs and expectations, and those roots grow a little deeper. So how do you fill the jar with marbles or grow the roots deeper? You build trust by taking tangible steps to build social capital with your team. I've got a few ideas below to get you started.
