- Do you think of helpfulness as something offered or received? Which would require more vulnerability, offering help or asking for it? Asking for help and receiving it reinforces vulnerability and support. It also engages feelings of reciprocity and generates team buy-in. In the past, I thought of help almost exclusively as something that I offered others. I've lived a pretty privileged life and I've bought into cultural values that elevate things like resilience and self-reliance. More often than not, I am quick to offer help, but I hesitate to ask for it for myself. But this is only half of the story. Over the past decade, I've increasingly practiced asking for help and learning to receive help has shifted my relationships in very significant ways.
