- Remember the first week of school at almost every elementary grade when your teacher would get the whole class to agree on some rules for the year? That was pure genius. As a high school teacher, I did the same thing each semester. As a coach, I made my teams establish ground rules. As a consultant, I walked clients through this very process. And as the COO at the Santa Barbara Zoo, I still use ground rules to kick off retreats, off-sites and new initiatives. Why? The same reason your kindergarten teacher did. Shared rules generate shared expectations, and shared expectations help people build trust. Healthy culture is built largely on clarity and trust, and ground rules support both. So if you want a healthy culture, establish some ground rules for working together. Depending on the team, this process can be brief or extended.
