We've all been there. Someone gives us feedback, and our first reaction is to explain, defend, or even push back. That's human. But as a shift leader, how you receive feedback matters just as much as how you give it. Defensiveness shuts down growth. It blocks you from hearing the part that could actually help you improve. So how do you shift your mindset? Well, start by listening all the way through without interrupting or planning your response while the other person is still talking. Then pause and ask yourself, “What's useful here?” Aim to identify something that you can learn or apply. It also helps to ask clarifying questions: “Can you give me a specific example?” or “What would better look like?” That shows you're not just listening to the words; you're engaging in the message and willing to improve. When the feedback stings a little, it means there's a ring of truth to it. Acknowledge and accept it for what it is. Maybe your best response at that time is, “Thanks for the…
