Mediate disagreements without taking sides
You don't have to take sides. You just have to keep things fair. When team members don't see eye to eye, it's tempting to pick a side or to stay out of it entirely. But as a shift leader, your job isn't to choose who's right—it’s to help your team move forward fairly and professionally. So how do you do that without getting pulled into the middle? Start by acknowledging the disagreement without judgment. You can say something like, “It sounds like there's a difference of opinion here. Let's take a minute and work through it.” That signals that you're not ignoring the issue, but you're also not taking sides. Next, invite each person to share their perspective — one at a time. Focus on facts, not feelings. And if things start to get heated, slow it down and ask clarifying questions. Keep your tone neutral and your language objective. “So you're saying that the hand-up wasn't clear — what did that look like for you in the moment?” From there, look for common ground.
